AURAS is operated by Aura Global FZ-LLC, a company registered in the Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone (RAKEZ) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

In other words, AURAS manages sales, customer service, and claims support,
while the policies themselves are issued under the IC EIG insurance program.

According to the website-safety tool ScamAdviser, the official AURAS domain (auras.insure) currently holds an “average to good” trust rating.

This means the site is generally considered legitimate and safe.
However, ScamAdviser’s score is generated automatically using factors such as domain age, hosting region, and traffic patterns—so it should not be viewed as an absolute guarantee.

Before purchasing, it’s best to double-check the latest registration details and the current status of the underwriting company (IC “EIG” LLC) for extra peace of mind.

Outside the Scope of Japanese Insurance Law

AURAS is an international insurance platform registered outside Japan and therefore not supervised by Japan’s Financial Services Agency or other domestic authorities.

All contracts, claims, and communications are handled in English,
so users are advised to apply and manage their policies at their own discretion and responsibility.

Some activities look Calm but are actually Active!

👉 Common pitfall:
applying under Calm but doing surfing or trekking

💡 Ballroom dancing is classified as Active (not “Cruise”).
Select Active if you plan to join dance sessions on board.
According to AURAS’s official classification, ballroom dancing is considered an active activity and requires the appropriate plan.

Cruises will still be covered even if you select Active or Extreme as your travel type.

📌 Update: August 2025 (Current Specification)

Partial Plan Changes & Add-On Coverage

At this time, AURAS does not allow you to apply the Active or Extreme plan for only part of your trip.

For example, even if you have a 110-day cruise that includes just a few days of activities such as a jeep safari or ziplining, you cannot switch to Active or Extreme coverage for those specific days within a single policy.

However, it is possible to:

  • Purchase a Calm plan for the entire cruise
  • Buy a separate one-day Extreme policy only for the day of the higher-risk activity
In that case, you would hold two separate policies with different coverage periods.

This “partial application” feature is currently under consideration by AURAS and may be added in a future update.

In short: no mid-policy switching (×), separate one-day policy (○).

🏔️ Machu Picchu Activity Classification (Updated October 2025)

According to AURAS official support, standard sightseeing at Machu Picchu (around 2,400 meters elevation, regular tourist route) is covered under the Active plan.

The Active plan includes “trekking (cross-country hiking without mountaineering equipment) up to 3,000 meters above sea level.”
Therefore, walking within the ruins area or following the usual circuits (1–4) is included.

However, climbs such as Huayna Picchu (2,720 m) or Machu Picchu Mountain (3,082 m) are considered Extreme activities and require the Extreme plan.

Sometimes, clicking “Download Policy” on the mobile site (via QR code) may result in an error.

If that happens, just email AURAS support, and they will resend your policy by email.

🗓️ My Actual Refund Experience (June 2025)

Here’s what happened when I tested the cancellation process:

  • I submitted the cancellation form the day after purchasing
  • The refund was processed smoothly
  • I received almost the entire amount back(about ¥80,000)with no fees deducted
This suggests that if you cancel very soon after purchase, before processing progresses,
the refund often comes back in full — even though the policy mentions a possible 40% administrative fee.

From AURAS support:

Refunds are issued to the original payment method and may take 10–45 days depending on your card issuer.

(In my case, it arrived much sooner.)

Using AURAS to Extend Your Credit Card Travel Insurance

Some credit cards, especially in Japan, come with built-in travel insurance that typically covers up to 90 days from departure.
For long-term travel or cruises, this leaves a gap in coverage after the 90-day limit.

AURAS allows you to fill this gap by starting coverage from the day your credit card insurance ends until your return date.

  • If purchasing before departure → No need to check “Already Traveling”
  • If purchasing during the trip → You must check “Already Traveling” (coverage starts 48 hours after payment)
💡 Cruises can be delayed on return (late arrival), so it’s best to set your coverage end date with a few extra days for safety.

“Will it actually work when something goes wrong?”

After reviewing the full AURAS Policy Document,
here are 7 essential points every traveler should know:
